My New Media Driver’s License

Going to celebrate New Year's Eve

No, I promise, it is not an ACTUAL driver’s license.  The New Media Driver’s License is actually a pioneer class at Michigan State University, Advertising 492 to be exact.  The class, from what I understand of it, will explore the latest methods of Social Networking and how that is rapidly becoming one of the premier ways to have contacts.  Every member of the class is to keep a blog, and we receive weekly assignments and blog posts that we have to complete.  But since this class isn’t about tests or papers or anything associated with a “typical” classroom setting, my first impression of it was I knew I was going to learn a lot.

Besides being a Facebook user, I know very little about social networking.  Especially over the Internet, which is where everything is apparently heading these days.  All I have previously heard about the Internet is are horror stories, you know, when you give out too much information and how you never really can tell whether or not a site is a scam or not.  So I am usually pretty caution when it comes to giving out information.  But one of the first things I can remember my professor saying at our first meeting was that for Social Networking, you WANT to be found.  Which pretty much contradicted everything I had ever been taught about the Internet.  So that gave me a clue as to how much I was going to learn in this class.
